Cold snap not over despite warmer temperatures

Don't put the blankets away just yet, more nippy nights are on the way for parts of the country this week.

Despite warmer temperatures across the country after the  weekend's cold snap, more negatives can be expected around the South Island and cool nights in parts of the North Island.

MetService say a southerly cold front will make its way up the country from Wednesday onwards bringing expected temperatures of 0degC for Alexandra and Queenstown 1degC on Wednesday night.

The cold weather is forecasted to get worse heading into the weekend with Christchurch dropping to 2degC overnight on Friday and Saturday.

Some South Island cities will be littered with bone chilling 1degC nights in Dunedin, Timaru and parts of the West Coast.

Mount Cook is expected to drop to -2degC too.

Moving up the country, Hamilton and parts of Taranaki are the losers in the north with 1degC and 2degC expected on Friday and Saturday nights.

Auckland will survive another day with a tropical 8degC over the weekend.

Some severe wind warnings have also been issued ahead of the cold front with a norwest wind outlook bringing winds of more than 130km/h to inland areas of Canterbury and the high country.

The winds are expected to bring decent gusts right up the country from Southland through to the lower North Island ahead of the pre-winter tickle at the end of the week.
