Don't stop going to concerts, events - NZ Police

Police say New Zealanders should continue attending concerts and sports events in the wake of the Manchester bombing which killed 22 people.

Police will be "taking lessons" from the Manchester bombing, but would not say whether security would be stepped up.

Speaking on The AM Show, Superintendent Sandra Manderson, who is in charge of police operations for all major sporting events this year, said "[police] are not complacent. We are vigilant."

"This very tragic event does have impact on us, but we are very prepared for this event. We have been planning [for] it for some considerable amount of time."

Supt Manderson said they would "consider all their options", but wouldn't say whether new measures such as metal detectors would be introduced.

"People need to go about their business and come to these concerts and games to enjoy themselves.

"We always need to be vigilant in what's going on around us, whether it be on the roads, in a concert, wherever we are, so we do expect some vigilance from our people, but we want them to come to these events, enjoy them and not to focus on this."

There are just 10 days until the opening of the British and Irish Lions tour. The games are expected to attract up to 20,000 fans to stadiums around the country.
