It was a quiet and sunny Sunday afternoon on a west Hamilton street when Georgia Floyd heard a loud, inhuman screaming coming from the road nearby.

It was an odd sight to see - a car swerving along Sunnyside Rd with a goat tied to the tow bar.

"I looked up [from my deck] and there was a car coming, it was driving quite slow - it was maybe going about 30km/h or 40km/h," she says.

It was the piercing scream which was "definitely not human" that caught her attention.

"To be honest, it was so loud, the screaming was so loud."

Ms Floyd wasn't sure what to do, so called police and reported it.

Police say the woman only stopped the vehicle once she'd realised the animal was tied to the car.

However, by then, the injuries to the small black goat were so extensive the decision was made to euthanise it.

The driver was left distressed by the incident, and didn't know how long she'd been dragging it, a police spokesperson says.

Police say it is doubtful any charges will be laid because it's unlikely it was done intentionally.

But Ms Floyd was confused about how the goat ended up tethered to the vehicle without the driver noticing.

"When I heard [the screaming] I was a good 100m away. I feel like, if she was in the car, how could you not hear something like that? And how could you get into a car tied to the back and not realise?

She said the street, in the suburb of Norton, was typically quiet. She had no idea where the goat would have come from, but it did have a collar around its neck.

"I don't think anyone around here would have a pet goat. I don't know if it belonged to her - I have no idea."

Ms Floyd says the person she'd spoken to on the phone said police would interview her if they needed to, "but they never did".

"I thought they would have come and talked to me because it sounds like I was the only person who saw them until [the driver] got caught."
