Invercargill dumpers could face charges for truckloads of rubbish

Invercargill City Council and the Department of Conservation are hunting for some rubbish dumpers who didn't make a clean getaway.

A truckload of junk, including 100 vacuum cleaners, has been dumped on conservation land near Invercargill.

As well as the vacuum cleaners, there are computer terminals, circuit boards, hair straighteners and an Xbox game amongst the junk pile.

"We're really shocked about this, there's been two or three truckloads of rubbish dumped in the last couple of weeks," DoC operations manager Tony Preston told Newshub.

DoC staff have been combing through the abandoned items looking for clues as to who may have left it there, near the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter.

"All it takes is an envelope or a utility bill with some names and addresses on, and if you can get some consistency with that sort of information here that'll lead us to the person," Mr Preston said.

He said the DoC is now left with the clean-up task.

"Fly tipping of rubbish on conservation land is a real problem throughout New Zealand, it happens wherever people can sneak away from public view and it is about avoiding dump charges," Mr Preston said.

"We'd really rather people had a bit of conscience and took their rubbish to the right place."

It's a lesson these dumpers may learn the hard way - Mr Preston said if they're caught, DoC will look at pressing charges under the Conservation Act.
