Man who killed skateboarder in hit-and-run pleads guilty

Zhenghang Yu, 33, has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of 16-year-old Jacob Pakura.

Jacob was skateboarding along Rua Rd in the Auckland suburb of Glen Eden in January when he was hit by Yu, driving a Honda Odyssey.

Crown prosecutor Juliet Bull told the court that Jacob's injuries were "catastrophic" and Yu made no attempt to return to assist him.

Yu was apprehended two days after the incident and told police he had no memory of it.

Yu was working as a truck driver at the time of the incident. He is a Chinese national, but has been a New Zealand resident for eight-and-a-half years.

Jacob's family were in the Waitakere District Court to hear the guilty plea.

Outside court, Jacob's mother Esther Pakura said she was relieved Yu had taken responsibility "in some way".

She said it was difficult to hear the details of her son's death in court again.

"I think most people in society, if they hit a person they would stop…make sure the person is okay. I don't think most people need to learn that lesson."

Yu will be sentenced on August 15, and has been remanded in custody.
