The sister of a missing New Zealand Navy sailor says his family is frustrated with the lack of communication they've had from the authorities.

Joseph Tua, 24, hasn't been seen since he went to visit a beach on Upolu Island, last Saturday.

The Mangere local's car was spotted in the carpark at closing time, and his clothing was found near the beach.

Mr Tua's parents and sisters have flown to Samoa to help and the Navy is sending a family liaison officer as well.

Isabel Tua, his sister, says the family is in doubt as to whether anyone is actually still looking for her brother.

"It's really frustrating when no one's communicating. We received no communication from the authorities until yesterday," she told Newshub. "No one's communicating any results to us, or if they're still searching."

Previous searches have come up empty. Ms Tua says she's not even sure the Samoan divers that have been involved so far are professionals.

"If you are a professional diver and if you can come out here and help, we're happy to pay for your services - everything from flights to accommodation."

Ms Tua says she, with family and friends, managed to get into her brother's Snapchat account, where they discovered he'd opened two Snapchats on Saturday morning, but everything after that hadn't been touched.

"The last Snapchat that everyone's seen is a Snapchat of him on the rocks of the beach."

The beach is near To-Sua Trench, where it was previously reported Mr Tua was last seen.

"Everyone's getting mixed up about where he was last located, and it definitely was not the To-Sua Trench."

With little communication from the authorities, Ms Tua says the family is at a loss about what to do next - except to look for him themselves.

"I watched my parents looking out to the ocean hoping, just standing there hoping he'll come up here, but for me that wasn't good enough," she says.

"We are going to try. If it means that I have to learn how to dive, I'll learn how to dive."

The New Zealand High Commission in Apia is working with the family, and Ms Tua says they have a meeting soon with the Deputy Prime Minister of Samoa.
