Nippy night ahead as New Zealand set to freeze

Some places around the country will only scrape above 0degC on Monday night as a pre-winter frost bite touches down across the country.

Auckland will find themselves in an unfamiliar climate with an expected 6degC overnight, and it only gets worse for regions further south.

Hamilton and Taupo residents will need to wrap up warm in the expected 1degC temperature overnight, while Palmerston North and Dannevirke will reach 2degC.

MetService's Andy Best says cool nights will lead to frost that will greet commuters in the morning as the temperatures stay low.

"People should be aware that there could be some black ice around in the early hours of the morning," he says.

It doesn't get any warmer in the South Island. Christchurch is expected to be 0degC overnight and  south Canterbury expected to drop to -1degC, which makes Auckland's 6degC overnight temperature look a little more balmy.

The chilly forecast is proving positive for some, Cardrona ski field have been lapping up the 10cm of snow that fell there after the cold snap over the weekend.

"[The mountains look] beautiful, cold, and white," Cardrona general manager Bridget Legnavsky says.

"[We've had] really, really cold temperatures which is what we are probably most excited about.

"It's the first good cold blast we've had this autumn, it's really nice to get the first cold temperatures of the season."

The cold temperatures are expected to be a common theme throughout some parts of country for the rest of the week.
