Police hunt hoons who destroyed Canterbury domain

Police are hunting a green Nissan 4WD after it tore up the only sports field in the South Canterbury township of Pleasant Point.

Residents there are angry, with the cost of the damage running into the thousands of dollars.

Giant divots and deep tread marks cover the length and breadth of Pleasant Points Domain.

Police say at 3am on Monday a 4WD tore back and forth across the town's rugby, soccer and cricket grounds, leaving a trail of destruction.

As well as leaving deep gouges in the town's main ground and destroying a junior goal post - the vandals tore up the town's two new cricket pitches.

Club captain Cameron Lundie is bitterly disappointed given the club had only just finished fundraising $22,000 to install them.

"It's a lot of hard work ruined in twenty minutes of what someone thinks is a bit of fun," he says.

The extent of the damage means the town's 15 football teams will have to find an alternative ground to play at for the foreseeable future.

Police say aside from tyre marks and destruction the hoons left something else behind - a piece of evidence.

A green flare guard from a mid-1990's Nissan Terrano was found next to the broken goal post.

"We urge anyone out there that may know someone that owns that type of vehicle or knows that someone's trying to get a spare part for it or has seen it very filthy, to contact your nearest police station," says Pleasant Point Police Constable Kris Howes.

The grounds could be closed for weeks as police close in on the delinquents who did dozens of donuts.
