Mountains of rubbish has been illegally dumped on Department of Conservation land near Tiwai in Southland.

Ironically, around 100 vacuum cleaners were part of the dumped rubbish that needed to be cleaned up.

DoC is appealing to the public to come forward with any information on the rubbish, which appears to have been dumped in a couple of big loads over the past few weeks.

"If anyone has seen any large trucks or vehicles acting suspiciously in the area, let us know. Aside from the large amount of inorganic material and junk, there was also garden and green waste which could have weeds that will impact the natural flora of the area." Operations manager Tony Preston says.

"It's just a really lazy thing to do."

Unfortunately for the dumpers they were "careless" enough to dump letters and bills with their names and addresses on them.

Even more bad news for the dumpers is the maximum punishment for an individual is two years in prison and a $100,000 fine for dumping contaminants.

Mr Preston says they are confident they will find the down south dumpers.

"It's a very distinctive load of rubbish to dump  how many people need to dispose of hundreds of vacuum cleaners? Surely, someone out there knows something."

Anyone with information is urged to contact DoC on 03 211 2400 or call in to the Murihiku office in Invercargill.
