Getting out of bed will be even more difficult as the country has had its coldest night of the year so far, with parts of the South Island dropping below zero degrees.
The whole country was hit with temperatures in the single digits overnight on Monday. Auckland dropping to 6degC, while Alexandra dropped to -2.7degC, which would've felt like -5degC, MetService says.
Though the sun is expected to defrost the country during the day, the reprieve will be short-lived as more chilly temperatures are expected later in the week.
A severe weather watch is in place for Canterbury, Otago, Dunedin and Southland as northwest gales are developing over the South Island.
