Two bulldog puppy siblings stolen from Gisborne have been found separated and hundreds of kilometres away thanks to an anonymous tip.

Police say the five-month-old puppies, Maui and Alleycat, were left orphaned after their mother Alice died.

They were stolen from their Gisborne home around three weeks ago; police say they were worth more than $1000 each.

An anonymous tip led police to addresses in the south Auckland suburb of Otara and in Kawerau where they used search warrants to recover both the dogs.

Police say the dogs' owner is "elated" to have the animals back.
