Child falls from cliff near Wanaka

A young boy has been seriously injured after falling from a cliff while on a walking track near Wanaka.

The eight-year-old boy fell on the Roby Roy Glacier walking track in the Matukituki Valley, near Mt Aspiring, just after 2pm on Wednesday.

A helicopter and ambulance were sent out to rescue him and he's since been flown to Dunedin hospital.

Earlier, a police spokesperson told Newshub the boy was conscious and with a parent while waiting for emergency services.
