Holy cow! Cattle stranded on island in Northland deluge

Around 50 cows have become stranded after extreme flooding in the Hokianga.

The wild weather has caused flooding and power cuts for homes in Fairburn, Kaitaia and Honeymoon Valley.

High tide also saw around 50 cows marooned on a small patch of land on Koutu Loop in the Hokianga.

Csilla Ford from My Little Eye Photography captured the image of her neighbour's animals. She says they were "not in any danger", and they've since reached dry land.

"The flooding is the worst I've ever seen it," she says.

Ms Ford also noted "heaps of herons" flying around, presumably with less space to touch down.

It's not the first time natural events have stranded pockets of cows in New Zealand. Newshub captured this image after the Kaikoura earthquake last year.
