Travelling between Hawke's Bay and the Manawatu is now even more difficult, with both the Manawatu Gorge and the main detour closed.

State Highway 3 between Ashhurst and Woodville has been closed since April 24 following a huge slip.

Now the main detour just to the north, along Saddle Road, is closed following a truck crash on Tuesday morning. There were no serious injuries, but power lines have been damaged.

Police say heavy delays are expected as this is the main alternative route. The only alternative is the Pahiatua Track, south of the gorge.

The gorge was only expected to be closed for about three weeks, but further slips and bad weather have led to delays.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is expected to provide an update later in the day.

The closure has impacted businesses at Woodville which rely on traffic travelling through the gorge.
