Manspreading divides New Zealand

The backlash against manspreading is sweeping the world - and the New Zealand public is as divided as men's legs over the issue.

Manspreading refers to the practice of some men sitting with their legs spread apart on public transport.

Outraged feminists in Madrid, Spain have led a campaign against manspreading in a bid to shame men into keeping their legs shut.

Newshub went to the people as they waited for their public transport to find out their opinions. And the people were split on the 'spread.

Some defended the right to take up space.

"F**k no," one man said, upon hearing of Madrid's plan. "That's just stupid as, they've just got to stop b****ing about it."

Even women agreed with him.

"I think it doesn't make much difference," one girl said. "I don't think it needs a solution."

But others disagreed - and said that it was a problem.

"It's just like, why do guys feel they have to sit like that," one man told Newshub. "Men need to be more aware of their presence and how it's affecting other people."

"I think it's a big issue, especially in regards to making other people feel safe or unsafe," another woman said.

"A lot of men aren't aware of the impact they have just because they've never been taught that they do have an impact."

She said that manspreaders need to stop taking up so much space.

"As a women it makes me feel very uncomfortable, and obviously it takes up my space - but again it's almost like a physical manifestation of a power dynamic that we see often, where a women has to feel like they have to take up the least space possible," she said.
