Police ask for public's help in Mataura stabbing

Southland police are continuing their investigation into the stabbing of an elderly man in Mataura.

A man entered the victim's home on Main St on Saturday night, demanded money and stabbed him once in the chest when he said he didn't have any.

The injured man in his 70's remains in a stable condition in Southland Hospital.

The offender has been described by police as unshaven, approximately 5 foot 10 in height, and wearing a grey hoodie and dark pants.

"We're keeping an open mind as to where the offender may have come from, and where he may have gone afterwards, so any information will be welcomed by the investigation team," a police spokesman said.
