A magnitude 6.0 earthquake striking the Kermadecs on Thursday evening has triggered a series of 'ghost quakes' in New Zealand.
GeoNet earlier reported a swarm of quakes ranging from magnitude 4.5 to 5.4 striking the East Coast of the North Island, within a span of three minutes from 7:04pm.
Residents from as far away as Auckland and Wellington had reported feeling light to moderate shaking.
But all wasn't at it seemed - GeoNet deleted the alerts after realising they weren't real earthquakes.
"Sorry folks, there was a M6.0 earthquake in the Kermadecs that has caused two ghost quakes!" it tweeted.
A 'ghost quake' occurs when GeoNet's seismic equipment misreads data from a large, far away earthquake as something smaller and closer.
