Snow covers parts of South Island

As southerly blasts hit the country this week, some parts of the South Island have received a sprinkling of snow.

Gore was one of the southern towns to be hit by the cold snap, but MetService say it's nothing compared to the polar blast in early May.

Snow was seen on the Crown Range earlier on Tuesday, the Queenstown Lakes District Council said, and motorists are being told to carry chains.

State Highway 87 from Outram to Kyeburn is only open to four-wheel-drive vehicles due to snow, NZTA says.

Spectators of the Lions verses Highlanders match at Forsyth Barr Stadium are being told to rug up warm and take a rain coat, as strong rain and winds are expected.
