South Auckland community group turning plastic waste into beds for the homeless

A south Auckland community group is turning plastic waste into camp-style mattresses for the homeless and rough sleepers in their neighbourhoods.

The bedding is been made by volunteers at zero cost, over a cup of coffee.

Most of the mattress-makers are recruits from the pensioner flats around the road from the Rata Vine Community Centre.

Their hands may be arthritic, but they're hooked on helping out those less fortunate.

The good Samaritans are making roll-up mattresses for the homeless, made from plarn - plastic yarn - spun from a mountain of discarded shopping bags.

It takes 700 bags to make one mat, meaning they're helping the environment as well as the community.
