Strong winds to whip around South Island
Severe winds are expected to batter Christchurch's Port Hills and nearby Banks Peninsula, Dunedin and coastal Clutha.
The gales up to 120km/h are expected to blow through to Wednesday afternoon before easing in the evening, MetService says.
"Winds of this strength could cause damage to trees, powerlines and unsecured structures and make driving hazardous, especially for tall sided vehicles and motorcycles," the forecaster's severe weather warning said.
Meanwhile, strong wind warnings for Wairarapa including the Tararua District, Hawkes Bay south of Hastings, Nelson west of Riwaka and coastal parts of Southland have been lifted.
