Auctioneer gets online abuse over Winston Peters joke

An Auckland auctioneer is receiving death threats online over a joke he made about Winston Peters.

During an auction Aaron Davis took a dig at the New Zealand First leader saying that "Anyone can bid cause Winston Peters isn't here today".

"I don't do political jokes, do I, because frankly too many have been elected," he added.

The video was posted to a Facebook page and Mr Davis began to receive abusive comments and messages, including "F***n kill him", "Winston would knock this guy out in a fight to the death," and "Corporate baby boomer scum".

It comes a week after his colleague, real estate agent Melissa Li, received "horrific" abuse for selling a home to Asian buyers. The abuse amplified after Mr Peters made a Facebook post about Ms Li, saying that she'd "rubbed New Zealanders nose in the fact foreigners are snapping up properties".

Mr Davis told NZME that his comments were "light-hearted fun", and that he was sticking up for his profession after the comments Mr Peters made last week

"I've got bills to pay and mouths to feed like every other New Zealander and I'm here to do a job and my job is to put the crowd at ease and to find the very best buyer for my seller," he said.

He said it's the Government's job to decide who could buy a house, and he'd sell a house to anyone who is legally allowed to buy one.

Mr Peters told NZME that the auctioneer was "a smart arse" and a "lily-livered lounge lizard".
