Destiny's Church leader Brian Tamaki has been slammed by Green MP Jan Logie for comments he made about women during a sermon.

Mr Tamaki posted a clip of the sermon on Facebook this morning, in which he says: "The best thing single mums can do is get to a church like this one and many others, and put yourself under the covering of a spiritual father." He said that "the woman relies on her man having Christ as cover" and "if you haven't got Christ in your head you are open game I can't help you anymore".

Ms Logie said that the comments from Mr Tamaki were "outdated, sexist rubbish". She told NZME: "It's that really old, outdated messages about men and women - you know, men having the answer and women needing men's protection." She said that solo mothers who are parenting by themselves are doing an amazing job, and are heroes.

Mr Tamaki has long been a controversial figure in New Zealand, in November last year he was under fire for linking homosexuality to the Kaikōura earthquake.

MPs were quick to slam the self-ordained church minister's comments as "medieval" and "sick".
