Childcare worker sentenced to five months home detention

A childcare worker has been sentenced to five months home detention in the Waitakere District court on Monday.

In May, Lynn Euphemia Abraham, 59, was found guilty of ten charges of assault on children.

She denied all charges for her offending, which began in 2011 and continued through until last year.

Those charges include six counts of assault by smacking children under five, one charge of assault for washing a four-year-old's mouth out with soap, and three charges of assault by force-feeding children under five - including a one-year-old. One of those assaulted was a special-needs child.

Judge Jelas said Abraham's offending was a "gross breach" of parents' trust.

Abraham was found not guilty on one assault charge for taping a child's mouth shut.
