A 70-year-old man has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after becoming trapped inside a campervan for three days.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew were called to Paeroa where the elderly man had fallen over, becoming trapped between the front seat and the foot pedal.

He was stuck there for three days before he was rescued by ambulance and fire crews, who took him to the local fire station. It is not known how the man was discovered, or who discovered him.

He was taken to Waikato Hospital on Sunday just after 4pm with tissue damage to his leg and hypothermia.

Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust said the "quite severe limb injuries" were likely the result of his attempts to escape.
