A Givealittle page set up for the family of a father and son killed in last week's a Mt Eden bus crash has raised nearly $40,000.

Christopher Tobin, known as "Tuffa", was killed when the car he was in with his children hit a bus last Tuesday.

On Friday doctors switched off life support for his critically injured one year-old son. A joint funeral will be held on Tuesday.

Family friend Kim McGregor told The AM Show they've been overwhelmed by the support.

"We've been having donations from all around the world."

She says it was Chris' dream to build a house for his family in the countryside, and hopes the donations will help it come true.

Kim says his Chris' widow Olivia has been by her injured daughter's bedside since the crash. The crash happened the day after Olivia's birthday.

"[She's in] shock, she's tired, can't sleep.

"I couldn't imagine really because even for us we're trying to [figure out], is this real? It's hard to take in."
