Jetstar and Qantas ban children seat extensions from flights

Jetstar and Qantas has announced a ban on passengers bringing certain travel accessories and devices on-board.

Inflatable cubes, bed boxes and leg hammocks which are generally used as in-flight sleeping devices for travelling children will no longer be allowed on Jetstar and Qantas flights across Australia and New Zealand.

That decision has caused disapproval by travelling parents, some saying it can be crucial for traveling families and getting children to settle on flights.

"It just makes life easier for parents and the child and gives everyone a relaxing holiday," one mother told 7 News.

Another parent said, "I think they are perfect and they help give the child more room [and] give the parents a bit more room [too]"

The ban is in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers but the ban doesn't include pillows.

"When in use, these devices have the potential to impede access to seats and aisles, damage aircraft seats and fixtures, and block access to emergency equipment," Jetstar told Newshub.

Items are prohibited if they:

  • attach to aircraft seats
  • are inserted between seats
  • otherwise block access to seat rows or aisles

Air New Zealand already prohibit such travel accessories for safety reasons however do allow bassinets on certain aircraft and car seats, provided they are approved for use in a motor vehicle.
