The fibre optic cable carrying all internet traffic for Southland and the south Otago region is literally hanging in the balance.

Heavy flooding and torrential rain has led to erosion along the swollen Waitati River north of Dunedin, exposing the internet cable.

Otago Civil Defence posted a picture of the exposed line, with the caption "Oops!"

"That green line hanging over the water is the fibre optic cable that carries all the internet traffic for Southland and Otago south of Waitati. It's been exposed by erosion alongside the highway. Thanks NZTA for the photo, and thanks Chorus who will be working to keep our digital comms flowing."

Chorus is working to secure the line.
