Staff at a 24-hour McDonald's had to hide in the freezer when robbers smashed their way in early on Monday morning.

Around 3:20am three men wearing balaclavas used crowbars to smash open a window at the Frankton, Hamilton restaurant. The store was only operating its drive-thru window at the time, Fairfax reports.

Staff leapt into the freezer to avoid the robbers, who fled in a dark Subaru.

"Staff inside hid in a freezer. It must have been frightening for them," Snr Sgt Ray Malcolmson said.

Police aren't yet sure if anything was taken. They were investigating the scene on Monday morning.

Neither police nor McDonald's were willing to release CCTV footage of the incident.
