Three ways to check your money is the real deal

The Reserve Bank has released a three step video to help New Zealanders identify the new Brighter Money bank note.

New Zealand's notes are some of the "most secure in the world", the bank says, with the technology used to make the notes making it much harder to create counterfeits.

The video goes through the security features of the new note to help people spot the difference between the "real deal" notes and copies.

People should "look, feel and tilt" the notes when examining them to ensure what they are holding is a genuine note.

"Being able to identify a real New Zealand Series 7 Brighter Money banknote is important to maintaining New Zealand's low counterfeit rate," Reserve Bank head of currency, property and security Steve Gordon said.

"New Zealand has a low counterfeit rate by international standards and the Bank wants to keep it that way. One of the ways we can do this is by ensuring the public know how to identify the security features on our banknotes."

There are three steps to identifying the new Series 7 notes:

    - Look

The edges of the holographic window should look smooth and the bird's silhouette, a map of New Zealand and a 3D feature of the bank note's value should also appear in the window.

     - Feel

You should feel raised ink of both the denomination and letters at the top of the note.

    - Tilt

Tilting the note reveals a bright, shining bar rolling across the bird's silhouette on the front and the holographic window's colours changing to reveal fine details.

The Reserve Bank said the video release wasn't prompted by any recent reports of counterfeit notes, and was just part of an ongoing awareness campaign.
