Video: Kiwi cameraman just metres from volcano blast

A New Zealand cameraman has had a lucky escape after the volcano he was filming erupted in front of him.

Geoff Mackley was setting up a camera on the rim of the Mt Yasur crater on Vanuatu's Tanna Island, when the crater exploded.

First there was a gas blast, followed by lava bombs and rocks blowing hundreds of meters up from the base of the crater.

Mr Mackley had been setting up a GoPro at the time when the blast went off, and was recorded by friend George Kourounis.

"When placing a GoPro, ***t happened," he wrote on Facebook along with a still photo of the explosion.

He also shared other photos of eruptions he captured at Mt Yasur's crater during his trip.
