Video: Waist-high floodwaters render Canterbury roads invisible

New footage from NZTA reveals the extend of the flooding in Christchurch, as contractors  are forced to wade through waist high water to check up on the state of the roads.

In a video of the floodwaters filmed by an NZTA contractor on State Highway 1, north of Dunsandel, the road is barely visible under the floodwaters.

"As you can see it's relatively deep. Higher than the fence line," the contractor explains in the clip.

In another video from NZTA of the Bankside Selwyn section of SH1, south of Christchurch, contractors can be seen wading in floodwaters up to their waists.

"Some sections of this highway are one metre deep," a spokesperson told Newshub.
