Waterview Tunnel's robot voice revealed

The Waterview Tunnel has a remote robot voice - and it's a woman.

Film-maker Logan Swinkels discovered the technological feature when there was a breakdown on the new Auckland motorway link as he was driving through.

A robotic female voice dialled into his car stereo with this message:

"Attention. This is the Control Room. The tunnel is partially blocked. Please proceed with caution and maintain a safe following distance."

And the new Waterview Tunnel - the country's longest at 2.4 kilometres - isn't alone.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says the feature is called "radio break-in" and it's currently used in other tunnels in this country, as well as worldwide.

As there is no radio coverage inside the tunnel, the powers that be capture the signal from the radio stations outside the tunnel then rebroadcast them inside.

When there's an emergency they can replace the signal from the radio stations with a message to vehicles from their operators about what's going on and what to do (but only inside the tunnel).

As well as the pre-recorded messages heard in Mr Swinkels' Tweet, tunnel operators can also broadcast live messages into vehicles inside.

But the driver and passengers can't talk back to the Control Room, as the radio rebroadcasting is unidirectional.

There are still emergency phones located at each cross passage if users need to call for help, which will put them in contact with a human operator.
