Carload left stranded after avalanche buries car

A carload of people were lucky not to be toppled off of the edge of a Mt Hutt cliff edge after an avalanche hit the side of their vehicle.

Hennie Murray was descending down the Canterbury mountain on Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by the snowstorm and strong winds.

"We just got this big thump on the side where the avalanche just came down and sort of pushed our car over to the side of the road," Mr Murray says.

"All our windows and everything were just covered… I guess we just didn’t really know what was going on at the time."

Around 200 people were left stranded at the top of the ski field on Wednesday afternoon when the storm hit. Mr Murray was in a convoy of around 20 cars trying to make their way down the mountain.

Video taken from inside the car shows snow pressed up against the left side so tightly when the window is opened it stays in place. The car was damaged in the storm, but the occupants escaped unharmed.
