A man has been rescued by helicopter after becoming too cold to walk out of a Hawke's Bay forest.
The 25-year-old became cold and lost in the Kaweka Forest Park before phoning for help and being found safe at about 8.30pm on Monday.
The man was lucky because, while he was mostly well prepared, he did not have appropriate clothing for when the weather changed or if he was out past daylight, said Senior Sergeant Mike Stevenson.
"It serves as a reminder that anyone walking in New Zealand's parks must prepare for changing conditions and emergencies because those worst-case scenarios do happen," he said.
He said the hiker had gotten into trouble after walking too far and becoming disoriented and too cold to walk back out.
