Kiwi's classic car collection goes under hammer

A schoolboy obsession that's become a classic car collection worth millions is going under the hammer.

The owner of one of New Zealand's largest car collections is selling off 100 of his cars.

John Stewart's 400-strong collection all started as a hobby when he left school at 14. Now, he's downsizing his collection.

"I thought, 'Hey it's about time I pull them out of storage and let someone else enjoy them,'" he says.

"It's probably a hobby that got well and truly out of control."

The collection is scattered around sheds in Christchurch and at his own house.

They're not luxury; they're the types everyday Kiwis drove, including Mr Stewart's family. Among them is his first car - a 1948 Ford V8.

"I probably only paid £50 for it, or $50. It wasn't a lot of money, and then when I tried to sell it, it was worth nothing. But that car would be worth 30-odd thousand dollars," he says.

"There's a few million dollars tied up in it. I've never been it for the money; I just worked hard and save it for New Zealand history."
