A crackdown on people parking on Miramar South streets to avoid parking charges at Wellington Airport is due to start.

From Monday Wellington City Council is imposing 24-hour parking restrictions. Residents will be entitled to one parking exemption per housing unit.

The restrictions apply in the area bounded by Calabar Road, Caledonia Street, Devonshire Road, Ellesmere Avenue, Crawford Green and Broadway.

Anyone parking for more than 24 hours in this area will be liable for a parking fine or their vehicle will be towed away.

One resident was so frustrated with the parking he slashed the tyres of more than 100 cars with a screw driver and was jailed for 22 months.

The sentencing judge had 51 victim impact statements. Many people had returned home from a holiday to find their car tyres slashed.
