The Privacy Commissioner is dispelling concerns by gun owners that a new process by TradeMe to access firearm information is not a privacy breach.

The country's biggest online trading site will now verify firearm licence details with police every time a transaction on the auction site is made.

Commissioner John Edwards says the public has expressed concern over the new regulation.

"I think people were worried that the police were opening up the firearms register to TradeMe - they're not. I think they were worried that TradeMe might have a copy - they don't."

Mr Edwards has a blunt message for gun owners who may not agree with TradeMe's new firearm regulation, saying the new rule is clear.

"It's entirely open to TradeMe to set its terms and conditions. If you don't want to sell your firearms on TradeMe because of those terms and conditions then you can sell your firearms elsewhere."

TradeMe has been seeking access to the national firearms licence register since last year, to prevent illegal sales online.
