An unknown man sexually violated a woman in Queenstown early on Sunday morning, after police believe he followed her inside through an unlocked door.

Police are calling for help from anyone who may have seen suspicious activity near the Mackinnon Tce, Fernhill Rd intersection between 1:30am and 2:45am.

It's believed the unknown man may have followed her as she walked along Fernhill Rd, following her inside her home and sexually violating her in the bedroom.

He was scared off after her phone rang and escaped through a bathroom window, the woman says.

The woman was uninjured in the attack and is being supported by her partner.

Police say the assault is of "extreme concern" for both police and the wider community.

"It is very fortunate for the victim that the attacker has been scared off," Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron says.

The man is described as being dark-skinned and average height, with an athletic build and wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt at the time. He spoke with a "non-Kiwi accent", Sgt Cameron says.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Queenstown police on (03) 441 1600, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
