Richie McCaw has been sized up for his statue that is set to be built in the small Otago town of Kurow.

The statue is in the design stage which included Mr McCaw being measured up by sculptor Mark Whyte, who is known for his many statues including that of Charles Upham VC in north Canterbury.

Peter Ellis, who is working on the project, says Mr McCaw is a great role model for young New Zealanders.

"He is a man who achieved his status through dedication and hard work. He is admired by New Zealanders for his modesty and humility," he says.

"The nation is proud of him. They want his name, and legacy, to be remembered.  Richie, from rural New Zealand, gained the admiration of the nation and the rugby world through hard work."

The statue is estimated to cost more than $155,000 to build.

Mr Whyte met with Mr McCaw last week to measure and photograph the 148-test All Black.

Mr Whyte then prepared a sketch of the vision for the statue, which is proposed to stand three metres tall, which has been agreed to by the McCaw family.
