The ocean tides at New Brighton are making it challenging to repair the area's earthquake damaged pier.

Part of the New Brighton Pier, in Christchurch, will close to the public in mid-August to let contractors finish the project, which started in early 2017.

Christchurch City Council's David Adamson says they had hoped to keep the pier open throughout the repairs, but most of the work is happening below sea level.

Council is hoping to gradually open the pier as work is finished.

Repairs to the pier are expected to wrap up in March 2018.
