A serious smash has killed one person and injured two others near Tirau, a small town in the Waikato region.
The two cars crashed into each other at around 6:15pm on Wednesday night, blocking State Highway 1 in Piarere between Borahora and Paparamu Rds.
Police say people were trapped in the cars immediately after the crash. One person has died and two others are in a critical condition.
The road has been closed and will remain shut for some time, police say. People are asked to avoid the area.
The serious crash unit is investigating.
