A body believed to belong to missing Dunedin man Stephen Lowe has been found in the Catlins area south of Dunedin, near McLean Falls.

Mr Lowe left his work on Portsmouth Dr in Dunedin at about 10am on September 15 and hadn't been seen since.

His car was found four days later in the Catlins Conservation Park, more than 160km outside of Dunedin.

Police suspended the search for him on Monday before resuming the search on Tuesday after reassessing areas of interest.

While a formal identification is yet to take place, police believe it is Mr Lowe.

His family have been informed and support is being provided to them.
