The family of a fisherman who went missing after his "Wendy J" fishing boat crashed on the West Coast have described him as "generous to a fault".

Police released statements from the families of Kieran Lynch, 22, and Jay Cairney, 43, on Wednesday afternoon, following the discovery of Mr Cairney's body on Tuesday.

"Jay was a very experienced fisherman and loved the sea, and always put anyone first, before himself," the statement read.

"Jay is so going to be missed by all who knew him."

The Greymouth-based vessel ran into trouble near Smoothwater Bay last Thursday night and wreckage was first spotted by a light aircraft flying in the area on Saturday morning.

Mr Lynch has yet to be found, but his family still hold hope for his safe return.

"[We] would like to thank Police and SAR volunteers who are giving up their time and using their valuable knowledge," their statement read.

"We are still hopeful for the safe return of our loved and treasured Kieran."

Despite on-going efforts, the Police dive squad is expected to wind up its search on Wednesday.
