Heavy rain causes slips and evacuations in Wellington

Winter ended dramatically in Wellington overnight with heavy rain bringing down 25 slips across the city.

Two slips that forced evacuations and closed a number of roads add to the list of more than 1000 slips that have affected the capital this winter.

Wellington resident Sym Gardiner's property was affected by the slips with debris coming close to his home.

"That rock, if it had gone another few centimetres was right through the window. And that's where I sleep."

"That's very lucky that it hit the concrete in there rather than coming across because something of that size would come ploughing through."

In Mount Victoria a slip landed on a car of a daughter looking after her parent's car whilst they're only holiday in Hawaii.

Resident Nicola Overton said, " Yep, and that's their car. Supposed to be looking after it but not doing such a good job."

A home in Wadestown and an apartment block in Te Aro had to be evacuated.

Roads were closed in Houghton Bay, Breaker Bay and one lane was blocked in Khandallah.

The council opened a welfare centre for those evacuated from Te Aro it expected it will days before they can go home.

Wellington City Council says there have been more major slips than usual this Winter.

Council spokeswoman Jenny Rains said, "Certainly from a welfare perspective there are far more houses that have been evacuated."

The council has counted almost 1600 slips for July and August, and that was before last night, the clean-up bill is running into the millions

Last night's slips were caused by heavy rainfall - falling on already sodden ground.

"It has just been rain after rain after rain here in Wellington," John Law said.

Authorities are urging Wellingtonians to be prepared and insured with more rain forecast for the start of spring.
