Magnitude 5.8 earthquake strikes off New Zealand's southern coast

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake has struck 585km off the Southland coast on Wednesday afternoon.

GeoNet initially reported it to have happened just 40km south-west of Invercargill at a depth of 13km.

However that has been revised to a 5.8 shake shortly after 1:40pm at a depth off 33km south-west of New Zealand.

At least 20 people reported feeling the quake.
