Police are speaking to a 29-year-old after a man was found dead following a "violent attack" in the Auckland suburb of Western Springs.
The man's body was found in a stairwell at a Housing New Zealand flat with fatal injuries on Great North Road late last night.
"We are in the very early stages of our investigation and are still in the process of identifying the victim but believe it to be a 69-year-old man who lived at the address," police say.
Police have now located a man seen in CCTV footage, who they believe may have more information.
"The 29-year-old man who was located by police in central Auckland is now assisting us with our enquiries and we cannot rule out the possibility of charges being laid."
The deceased man is thought to have lived alone, and his family have been notified of his death.
His body is still at the scene but will be removed later on Wednesday.
More than 15 police officers in blue hazmat suits are on the scene at a block of flats on Great North Rd.
A large tent has been set up for a scene examination and police are interviewing neighbours.
