Uber has announced it will ban riders caught engaging in any sexual activity in the car.

The transport company's 'Community Guidelines for New Zealand', announced on Sunday, set out the ground rules and list the activities that can see riders losing access to Uber.

They include prohibitions on any fondling or flirting in the vehicle - that means passengers as well as drivers.

"You shouldn't touch or flirt with other people in the car," Uber warns.

"As a reminder, Uber has a no sex rule. That's no sexual conduct with drivers or fellow riders, no matter what. And you should never hit or otherwise hurt a driver or fellow passenger."

Uber's general manager for New Zealand, Richard Menzies, says the guidelines have been published to spell out the behaviour expected of both riders and drivers when using the app.

"We want Uber journeys to be enjoyable for everyone in the car, and that can only happen when both riders and drivers treat each other with respect," he says.

"While we find the vast majority of riders are courteous, we've seen the odd instance of rude or inappropriate behaviour, and the community guidelines make it clear this is not on."

Other things that can get you banned include things like breaking local laws, intentionally damaging the car or driver's property, hurting the driver or other passengers, or making verbal threats or comments that are aggressive or abusive.

Auckland Uber driver Hans has been driving since December 2015 and now has around 6,000 trips under his belt. He says the majority of Kiwis are "super people", but he's had a few bad experiences.

"Six out of 10 riders are great, they're really fun to have in the car. We laugh, joke, or have good serious discussions about politics or other issues," he says.

"One in 10 riders I'd say are grumpy. But in almost two years of driving for Uber I've only had three genuinely unpleasant experiences: a young guy who spoke very disrespectfully to me; a group of obscenely drunk young ladies and another woman who shrieked at me hysterically."
