A woman has been freed after getting her leg stuck in a septic tank.

Fire and Emergency NZ were called to a property on Kauri Road in Whenuapai shortly after 3pm on Saturday.

The initial information was that a person had fallen into a septic tank. When the first fire truck crew arrived they reported a female patient was above ground and wedged by a large concrete slab.

They dug a 2m by 2m trench to relieve pressure on the tank and free the woman, a spokeswoman said.

The septic tank's lid had collapsed, pinning the woman's ankle. She was wearing a gumboot and the skin on her leg was not broken so emergency services were not worried about infection, NZME reports.

The woman was taken by ambulance to hospital.
