The Police National Dive Squad has joined the search for two missing boaties on the West Coast.

Greymouth-based fishing vessel Wendy J got into trouble near Smoothwater Bay, near Jackson Bay, on Thursday night.

Wreckage was spotted on Saturday morning by a light aircraft flying in the area.

Two fishermen have not been seen since.

A third fisherman was found on the beach on Saturday afternoon, about 8km southwest of where the vessel went down.

Police say two fishing nets have been found on the shoreline in the area, which police believe are likely to have come from the boat.

They understand the boat may have lost power and an assessment will be made to determine how that may have happened.
