An Auckland central intermediate school has warned parents they may be banned from the premises should they criticise the school on social media.

Earlier this month Blockhouse Bay Intermediate students were forced to write apology letters after asking Warriors players questions about the team's poor performance.

After news of the incident spread, school board of trustees' chairman Russell Matthews wrote to parents, telling them using social media to "undermine" the school could lead to banishment.

The letter, obtained by NZME, says: "A number of parents have been vocal in discrediting the school through social media. I can be clear that while we will continue to welcome their children, parents who use social media to undermine our staff and community, will no longer be welcome in our school."

The letter encourages "all parents as members of our community and with students in the school to follow the school's procedures".

The school did not respond to requests for comment on the letter.

Dr Bill Hodge, an expert in criminal law at the University of Auckland, told NZME that the school could trespass parents if they wish, but a formal ban would be "pretty outrageous".
